Wrap Up

Well, this was an interesting exercise.

There were two items that especially caught my eye.

I am still wondering about the Kirklands.  On April 7, 1855 both Catherine Kirkland, age 64, and Sarah Kirkland age 30 died. What is the story there? Sickness, accident, foul play?

As for the other, did you notice that on April 12, 1863 Aaron Radley died and on April 17, 1863 Aaron V. Radliff died.  Both age 21. Both served with Co. F of the 7^th New York during the Civil War.  

After a little digging in the Town Clerks Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War and the NY Civil War Muster Roll Abstracts (via Ancestry.com via the New York State Archives), it turns out that (1) the April 12 date is a transcription error made by Col William Hannay when he transcribed the Bethlehem Cemetery’s records in 1932 and (2) Aaron Radley and Aaron Radliff are probably the same person.   

The Town Clerk’s register lists Aaron Radley son of Susan Veeder and Lewis. It also lists James Radliff son of Susan Veeder and Lewis. The Muster Roll abstracts have no Aaron Radliff but there is James identified with both last names Radley and Radliff.  Aaron Radley is listed in the abstracts with the notation “returned with the regiment and died soon after.”

On this day in 1846, Jacob Hocksley dies at age 76. He is buried in the Houghtaling family Burial Ground.  

Also on this day in 1803, John Hildebrandt, Jr. married Catharine Rosekrans.

April 29

On this day in 1810, Cornelius Van DerZee married Mary VanBergen.

April 28

On this day in 1797, laying out a road near Teunis Slingerland’s from the bridge over Fontine Kill westerly. The Road Records book continues on April 29, 1797: from old and new road above mentioned to Van Zandt’s Mills. 

Also on this day in 1848, Michael Edgar Niver was baptized at the First Reformed Church of Bethlehem. 

April 27

On this day in 1831, Elizabeth LaGrange died at age 84.

April 26

On this day in 1849, Baltus Brate, age 66 years, died. He rests in the family burying  ground next to his wife Catharine. 

Also on this day in 1814, Peter A. Bradt reported stray animals on his property.

April 25

On this day in 1935, Col. William V. Hannay copied information from the tombstones of the LaGrange-McClasky Burying Ground that was located on Krumkill Road. 

Also on this date in 1829, survey of the Plumanskill (Crumkill) road from the Albany & Delaware Turnpike to the Bethlehem Turnpike near John Haswells.

On this day in 1824, John Becker reported stray animals on his property.

April 23

On this day in 1832, the infant daughter of Jacob and Sarah Ann Snyder died.

April 22

On this day in 1816, Daniel Flansburgh registered his cattle mark with the Town of Bethlehem.

April 21

On this day in 1809, road laid out from the Bethlehem & Guilderland line to the house of Garrett. J. Sager.  

Also on this day in 1809, laying out a road from Albany & Delaware Turnpike near the house of Samuel Ingraham and continuing until it intersects the Helderberg road near the house of Jacob Houck.

April 20

On this day in 1818, Col Garret P. Van Wie died in his 40^th year. 

He was a soldier during the War of 1812 and his tombstone is inscribed:

Short is our longest day of life
And soon its prospects end.
Yet on that day’s uncertain date
Eternity depends.

April 19

On this day in 1834, Maria, wife of John I. Groesbeck died, age 35 years, 6 months, 11 days of typhus fever.

Also on this day in 1821, Frances, daughter of Rensselaer & Elizabeth Nicoll and wife of John VanRensselaer, died at age 71 years and 1 month.  Frances was born in 1750 and would have been in her 20s during the American Revolution.  

April 18

On this day in 1876, William N. Sill died at age 51 years and 7 days.  
 

Also on this day in 1795, Peter A. Bradt, Abraham Hallenbeck, Staats Bradt, Michael Palmeteer, and Girchem Fuller registered their is cattle marks with the Town of Bethlehem. 

April 17

On this day in 1863 Aaron V. Radliff died, aged 21 years. He served with Co F, 7^th NY Heavy Artillery during the Civil War.

On this day in 1809, Peter, son of Wilhelmus Winne and Echje VanDerZee was born.

April 15

On this day in 1834, Rachel, age 10 years, 6 months and 29 days, died. She was the daughter of John and Rachel Kelderhouse. 

April 14

On this day in 1805, Mariah Moak was born.  She died September 18, 1822.

On this day in 1797, Albert Vanderzee registered his cattle mark. 

Also on this day in 1802, Isaac, son of Matheas Strevel and Susannah Wright, was born.

On this day in 1766, Elizabeth Henry was born.  She was the wife of Revolutionary War veteran James Selkirk and died in 1844 at age 78. 

Also on this day in 1863, Aaron Radley died. He served with Co F. of the 7^th NYHA, age 21.

On this day in 1811, Storm A. Bradt reported stray animals on his property.  

Also on this day in 1803, Dina Schoonmaker, Ephraim Vossman and Jacob Kimmey were baptized at the First Reformed Church of Bethlehem.

On this day in 1806, Elizabeth Bender, wife of Revolutionary War veteran Christian Bender, died in her 61^st year.

On this day in 1916, Civil War Veteran John Brue (Co H, 43^rd NYVI) died at age 72.

Also on this day in 1802, David Rogers and Abigail Van Plank baptized their son John Van Plank at the First Reformed Church of Bethlehem.

Also on this day in 1808, road laid out from the road that goes past the Bethlehem Meeting House to Albany from the N.E. corner of Wendell W. Hilabrand N.E. & E. & S.E. to the Albany & Berne (Green) Turnpike Road through the land of Abram Rosekrans & Westervelt.

April 7

On this day in 1855, Catherine, wife of John Kirkland, died at age 64. 
Also on this day in 1855, Sarah, wife of A.S. Kirkland, died at age 30.

On this day in 1853, Mary, wife of Peter Esmey died at age 75.

On this day in 1857, Cathy VanDerHyden died in her 76^th year. 

She was the wife of Col Garret P. VanWie. 

Her tombstone reads:

Dearest mother, thou has left us
Here thy loss we deeply feel
Rueless God that hath berift us
He can all our sorrows heal.
Beautiful be thy silent slumber
Beautiful in the grave so low
Thou no more will join our number

On this day in 1798, David Burhans registered his cattle mark with the Town of Bethlehem.

On this day in 1820, Catharine daughter of Peter Westervelt and Catharine Pool was born.

On this day in 1838, David W. Bender died, aged 37 years, 4 months and 8 days. He is buried in the Bender Family Burying Ground.

On this day in 1801, Lena, daughter of Marcus Lasher Jr & Elizabeth Kilmore was born. 

A Daily Experiment

The Records of the People of the Town of Bethlehem was edited by Florence Christoph & Peter R. Christoph and published by the Bethlehem Historical Association in 1982.  It compiles a wealth of data about Bethlehem people.

For the month of April, I am going to post a daily snippet of info about someone from Bethlehem's history.  You'll have to read till the end of the month to find the two stories that caught my eye.
